I understand that Maori have a taboo against sitting on tables. Assuming I want to be a good little member of a multi-cultural society that Maori have a prominent place in...
It seems obvious to me that I can ignore this in my own house.
It seems equally obvious to me that I should respect that in a Maori friend's house or on a marae.
But what about if I'm at my home and I have a Maori friend visiting?
Or I'm in a public place where I don't know the values of the owners?
Or even if I know that the owners won't mind, but other people are there who might?
And what if that public place is a state-funded place such as the Beehive?
(And yes I am avoiding mentioning the article in Stuff today.)
I'm a fan of politeness when appropriate but I also don't want to be controlled by the superstitions and religious beliefs of others. And I'm still not sure where to draw the line.
